What are you after in life? Or even more deeply, what purpose do you believe you are here to fulfill?
Maybe you feel like you have a purpose, but you can’t really define it in words.
Maybe you feel lost, without a purpose, feeling as if the gods forgot about you when they were sprinkling pixy dust on the rest of humankind.
Or maybe still, you believe you have discovered your purpose, but are not sure whether it is the right one.
If any of these “problems” resonate with you, you are not alone. I intimately know how you feel.
I feel like I am always searching for the right path that will bring my life meaning and deliver me from suffering. This search has manifested itself in many different ways in my life.
First, it was striving to get a high paying job. Then it translated itself into rejecting the “corporate” ladder and taking a job at a cooler, trendier startup. And most recently, to starting a blog and sharing my story and what I’ve learned with the hopes of helping others.
None of these paths are wrong. But none of them are right either.
In modern days, it seems as if entrepreneurship and “following your passion” has become our new religion. To be fulfilled or “worthy” we must create a business or write a book. If you don’t believe this way, then you are a sinner, unworthy of meaning or fulfillment.
You are that person on the outside looking in on the righteous, who seems to have it all figured out.
But just as a religion of old has formed walls and hierarchy that removes the mysticism and beauty of spirituality, so has the never-ending cycle of needing to find meaning through a professional pursuit.
This search leaves so many frustrated, feeling like if they work a 9-5 job that pays a good money, they are less than, which of course is not true.
What matters is not what you do, be it a non-profit worker, a banker, or an entrepreneur. These are simply professional titles. Ways to make money at the end of the day. None is better than the others.
What actually matters is the space in which you bring yourself to these activities. Why are you doing them? If you are pursuing your passion by starting a blog in hopes that it will bring your life meaning, you may find yourself more lost in the end.
Kafka put it this way:
“You need not to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. You need not even listen, simply wait. You need not even wait, just learn to become quiet, and still, and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked. It has no choice; It will roll in ecstasy at your feet.”
A job, a business, a relationship, will not give you the meaning you desire without you first understanding that basic truth of your wholeness. That nothing and no one can complete you,..
You are already complete.
You are already loved.
And nothing you do can take that away or add to it.
Today, where you stand is holy ground. Whether you are religious or not. Black or white. American or European. You are fully and completely loved.
There is no one is keeping score to see if your career falls into the “noble” category or not. You don’t have to prove your worth.
With each in-breath and out-breath, you are completing this reality. You need not do anything to reap the benefits of breathing. It simply happens. The air enters you and exits you. It is a life force and one that all people, even investment bankers, are rewarded with.
There is nothing you can do or not do to reverse this reality.
So, just be, my brothers and sisters.
Understand that you have it all already. And then, and only then, can real transformation and meaning be found.
If you want to start a business, great!
If you want to work a $100k job in finance, great!
We might as well put our efforts into serving others and utilizing our skills to the utmost.
But do it with the understanding that it is not getting you anywhere. You have already arrived. You already won the game and so has everyone else. Nothing you can do can change this. Not a million dollar exit, saving thousands of lives or working the front desk at Soul Cycle.
Wipe away the muddiness, and discover the beauty of your own soul. Let’s pursue the path before us, not because it will bring us happiness/fulfillment/meaning, but out of our deep sense of connection with the world around us.
